Position Purpose
To serve as a Clinical Veterinarian assisting researchers in all aspects of veterinary care within the Animal Care & Use Program at Dartmouth, the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, and the VA facility by performing professional activities associated with the day-to-day clinical support.
Required Qualifications
* D.V.M. or V.M.D. from an accredited veterinary medical college and post-doctoral training or 2-3 years of experience in laboratory animal medicine, or the equivalent.
* Board certification or eligibility for board certification in laboratory animal medicine.
* Thorough knowledge of compliance standards procedures relating to the care of animals in a research environment.
* Good interpersonal and communication skills.
* Excellent Surgical skills.
* Ability to instruct others in the care and use of laboratory animals.
* Thorough knowledge of the hazards of exposure to zoonotic diseases, animal scratches and bites, carcinogenic materials, and radioisotopes.
* Ability to lift animals weighing up to 50 pounds.
* Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse community.

Clinical Veterinarian Responsibilities
* Performs regular clinical services, including surgery as necessary. Keeps research investigators informed on the condition of animals involved in research studies and of the potential impact of such conditions upon research studies; recommends action as appropriate.
* Conducts appropriate checks and observations to insure that requirements of relevant procedures are met in all respects and that relevant reports are accurate and complete. Collaborates with the Director regarding the potential impact on research activities.
* May participate in the development and execution of an educational program directed at facilitating compliance of staff and investigator animal care and use activities with the requirements of law and regulation. May serve as an instructor or group leader in orientations, annual laboratory continuing education and special presentations.
* Advises investigators on experimental models and designs; equipment and techniques. Anticipates potential problem areas associated with proposed approaches; advises on approaches that will eliminate or minimize problems, that will achieve specific objectives, or that will contribute to more productive research.
* Trains investigators in surgical techniques. Assists or advises investigators in the execution of experimental procedures. Modifies/adapts established veterinary methods, procedures, or techniques as necessary to meet the special requirements of working with laboratory animals.
* Supports the IACUC through the provision of protocol, attendance at monthly meetings, review and approval authorization for some protocols. Leads or supports IACUC subcommittees in semiannual evaluation.
* In a timely way, reports and provides all required support for billing of care and procedures to the CCMR program office.
