The Herald-Mail in Hagerstown, Md., is looking for a Community Watchdog Reporter who can tell stories from the points of view of populations who are not well represented in traditional/historic media.
We want stories with depth about underserved populations, and more importantly, from and with context from these communities. This beat will take readers inside the lives and homes of people living in Hagerstown and parts of Washington County, Md., especially those neighborhoods that have long been ignored or seen largely in coverage of negative issues.
A primary function of this beat will be to keep an eye on city government and how it interacts with its citizens, many of whom fall into the underserved category. The position also might require some breaking news reporting as needed.
The Herald-Mail believes strongly in the subscriber story model and that content is reporter-driven. We expect you to know your beat and community. We are looking for someone who can find and tell good stories that make an impact in the community and with our readers.
If this is the kind of journalism you want to do, send us your stuff. If you want to learn more first, contact News Director Joe Deinlein.
Requirements:
• One to three years' experience at a daily news organization.
• Familiarity with digital storytelling tools and techniques.
• Outstanding core journalism skills, including writing, spelling and grammar. We don't want to have to teach you the basics of AP style.
• Must thrive in a competitive news market while possessing a collaborative spirit.
• Deep understanding of journalism ethics.
• Ability to multi-task.
HOW TO APPLY
We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:
1) Your resume – one to two pages, with references.
2) A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.
3) Links to 3-5 online samples of your work. Show us what you’ve produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do for Hagerstown.
It is important that these items be assembled in a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
