Job Description
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR LARGE ANIMAL MEDICINE AND SURGERY, Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM), to oversee all aspects of medical and surgical care of large animal laboratory animal species and supervise veterinarians providing such care; provide leadership of DCM’s surgery core facility; and serve as the primary resource for the care, development, and refinement of animal models within the MIT community.Will join ten veterinarians in fulfilling DCM’s mission to provide the best in animal care and collaborative research support and be an integral part of an established comparative medicine training program providing training to veterinarians and veterinary students in research, laboratory animal medicine, and comparative pathology.
DCM is tasked with the care of a wide variety of species and includes transgenic and germ-free facilities. Opportunities for collaborative and/or independent research abound and will be encouraged.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school or training with ECFVG certification or formal training as a veterinary technician (CVT, RVT, or an equivalent degree) with advanced training in anesthesia and surgery; license to practice as a veterinary medical doctor or veterinary technician in at least one state; and ability to work effectively as part of a team. PREFERRED: two years’ management/supervisory experience; experience collaborating with researchers and mentoring students; and formal training in comparative medicine with diplomate status in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) or European College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ECLAM), or formal advanced training in veterinary surgery (American College of Veterinary Surgery, Academy of Surgical Research, or equivalent). Those with a minimum of two years’ experience practicing or training in veterinary surgery in a research setting may be considered.Job #22758
