Job Description
The Department of Sociology at the University of Missouri-Saint Louis invites applications for a full-time non-tenure track position at the assistant teaching professor rank, to begin in August 2024. The Department is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement with diverse organizations in the St. Louis area. The Department of Sociology is among the most interdisciplinary departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. We offer an undergraduate curriculum that links a broad, community-based, sociological education with focused training in one of four emphasis areas: urban sociology, health and aging, gender and families, and military sociology. The department is home to six full-time faculty members, over 150 students (BA, BS, certificates, and minors), and it houses the University's interdisciplinary programs in organizational leadership (BA), gender studies, gerontology, urban studies, and veterans studies.
We welcome applications from professionals with a Ph.D. in Sociology, or closely aligned discipline, who enjoy teaching with a focused attention to student success among both traditional and non-traditional students in the classroom and online. Responsibilities of this position include a teaching load of four courses per semester with in-person and online modalities, advising undergraduate students, supervising undergraduate student research, and participating in departmental and faculty governance. Areas of teaching for this position could include, but are not limited to, introductory sociology, sociological theory, quantitative social science research and methods, urban sociology, organizational sociology, GIS, and demography.
This position is an academic (9-month), non-tenure-track appointment. Applicants must be able to start work on campus by August 12, 2024
Qualifications
Your success in the hiring process requires the following experience and capabilities:
Required Qualifications:
· A Ph.D. in Sociology, or closely aligned discipline, with a broad knowledge of sociological topics, by the time of appointment.
· Evidence of successfully teaching core sociology courses at the undergraduate level.
· Expertise in quantitative social science research and methods, including social statistics using modern statistical software tools (R is preferred).
Preferred Qualifications:
· Beginning to Intermediate capabilities in Geographic Information System related analysis and demography (ArcGIS preferred).
· Experience in Organizational Studies focused on work settings in urban areas.
Anticipated Hiring Range
The salary and rank are competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
