Job Description

The Business Manager is responsible for the management of the business and fiscal operations of the divisions they oversee. The position reports to the Director III, Business Administration in the Division of Finance and Administration but works in collaboration with the Provost, Deans, and other campus leadership teams to accomplish division as well as campus objectives. This position supports the Office of the Provost, Academic Affairs, Access and Academic Support, The Thomas Jefferson, and Mercantile Libraries, UMSL Global and the Pierre Laclede Honors College.

Requires a proactive, detail-oriented person with excellent communication skills and who enjoys working with executive-level administrators, faculty, and staff to accomplish projects under pressure and within deadlines.

Duties include:
  • Apply a comprehensive knowledge of policy and process to the business and fiscal operations of the units; Direct and conduct actions related to accounting, budgeting, financial planning, payroll and contracts.
  • Assist with the administration of long-term strategic plans developed by the units, including budget and operations.
  • Provide supervision, training, support and guidance to employees with fiscal responsibility. Oversee staff recruitment efforts.
  • Oversee annual operational and gift budgets that include costs and revenues as developed by academic leadership teams and central administration.
  • Project and monitor budget performance for all financially related operations.
  • Participate in the development of standard processes and tools for all financial functions with all other business and functional managers within the Finance organization.
  • Maintain an environment of compliance to fiscal policies and procedures, ensure transactions are properly documented and authorized, and ensure adequacy of internal controls to safeguard assets and minimize risk.
  • Partner with Shared Services, HR, IT and other campus functional areas to conduct business operations and to assist with implementing initiatives.
  • Understand and assist in the development and execution of hiring strategy and initiating hiring orders. Manage payroll and position changes.
  • Collect, track, and provide business information and non-academic metrics to guide the organization to on-target performance.
  • Configure and maintain financial authorizations and approval structure for departments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 5 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

  • Ability to work with a diverse array of personalities, under pressure and within deadlines, especially with high-level administrators, executives, faculty, and staff.
  • Goal oriented and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Aptitude for consensus building and the ability to maintain positive constituent and colleague relationships through constructive communication skills and professionalism.
  • Strong collaborative, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Good listener with excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Experience in supervising employees.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Pay commensurate with education and experience.
Hiring Range: $56,864 - $75,000 Annual
Grade: GGS-11
