Job Description
The Interior Design program at Virginia Tech has consistently been ranked in the top ten by Design Intelligence since 2002. We invite applications for a tenure-track position at either an assistant or associate professor level effective August 2023. The program is part of the new School of Design, one of the four schools in the newly formed College of Architecture, Arts, and Design (AAD). The School of Design includes undergraduate and graduate programs in industrial design, interior design, and landscape architecture and includes over 15 full-time faculty and staff. The Program of Interior Design has 5 full time faculty and roughly 160 undergraduate interior design majors.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in teaching design studio and/or in teaching required courses related to their specific expertise within the CIDA accredited professional interior design curriculum.
The primary responsibility of the faculty position is to balance teaching a design studio with a lecture course in the accredited undergraduate Interior Design Program (BS.ID) each semester combined with an externally recognized research and scholarship agenda. Teaching responsibilities include teaching one design studio each semester plus one required lecture/seminar course in professional practice, construction documents, building systems, lighting design, materials and finishes, design research, environment and behavior, and building codes and accessibility related to commercial design with a focus on sustainability and wellness. The successful candidate will be expected to combine a passion for teaching studio and lecture courses with a robust research and scholarship agenda.
Tenure-track appointments carry an expectation of professional responsibilities in teaching/learning, research/discovery, and outreach/engagement/service.
The School of Design offers ample opportunities for faculty cooperation and interaction within the school and college, as well as across the university. Applicants are expected to work collaboratively and encouraged to work across disciplines. New faculty will be expected to work with the college in furthering key strategic initiatives in the realization of the University’s Beyond Boundaries vision and new AAD initiatives.

We do this by acknowledging and addressing our past, recognizing our current responsibility, and acting in the interests of building and sustaining communities that are truly safe, supportive, and inclusive for all.
